I am dedicated to the Lord Jesus Christ, Who brought me out of the darkness and into His light, and Who is the example of someone who wasn't afraid to hang out with society's "undesirables" in order to show them The Way, The Truth, and The Life.

"The 12 Days of Christmas"

Catholics in England during the period 1558 to 1829 were prohibited by law to practice their faith either in public or private. It was illegal to be Catholic until Parliament finally emancipated Catholics in England in 1829.

"The Twelve Days of Christmas" was written in England as one of the "catechism songs" to help young Catholics learn the basics of their faith. In short, it was a coded-message, a memory aid. Since the song sounded like rhyming nonsense, young Catholics could sing the song without fear of imprisonment. The authorities would not know that it was a religious song.

"The 12 Days of Christmas" is in a sense an allegory. Each of the items in the song represents something significant to the teachings of the Catholic faith. The hidden meaning of each gift was designed to help Catholic children learn their faith. The better acquainted one is with the Bible, the more these interpretations have significance.

The song goes, "On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me…"
The "true love" mentioned in the song doesn’t refer to an earthly suitor, but it refers to God Himself. The "me" who receives the presents refers to every baptized person. i.e. the Church.

1st Day: The partridge in a pear tree is Christ Jesus upon the Cross. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge because she would feign injury to decoy a predator away from her nestlings. She was even willing to die for them. The tree is the symbol of the fall of the human race through the sin of Adam and Eve. It is also the symbol of its redemption by Jesus Christ on the tree of the Cross.
2nd Day: The "two turtle doves" refers to the Old and New Testaments.
3rd Day: The "three French hens" stand for faith, hope and love—the three gifts of the Spirit that abide (1 Corinthians 13).
4th Day: The "four calling birds" refers to the four evangelists who wrote the Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke and John—which sing the song of salvation through Jesus Christ.
5th Day: The "five golden rings" represents the first five books of the Bible, also called the Jewish Torah: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
6th Day: The "six geese a-laying" is the six days of creation.
7th Day: The "seven swans a-swimming" refers to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord.
8th Day: The "eight maids a milking " reminded children of the eight beatitudes listed in the Sermon on the Mount.
9th Day: The "nine ladies dancing" were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.
10th Day: The "ten lords a-leaping" represents the Ten Commandments
11th Day: The "eleven pipers piping" refers to the eleven faithful apostles.
12th Day: The ‘twelve drummers drumming" were the twelve points of belief expressed in the Apostles’ Creed: belief in God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, that Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, made man, crucified, died and arose on the third day, that he sits at the right hand of the father and will come again, the resurrection of the dead and life everlasting.

So the next time you hear "the Twelve Days of Christmas" consider how this otherwise non-religious sounding song had its origins in keeping alive the teaching of the Catholic faith.

goodbye...

a friend texted me a few days before, 10/29/07 about a common friend who died last July. she told me that our friend, Thor, committed suicide. sad. but that's life. some are too scared to face the reality and so damn foolish that they think their death would bring someone close to them. these people, in general, are so selfish. they only think of themselves and their not thinking of the people who loves them. they only think of their feelings and not the feelings of the people they'll be leaving. why do these people ever think of if as a solution?! thor was a friend. and now, i dont know what to think of what he did. to himself, his family, friends and his wife.
anyways, Thor, you chose to be selfish. i have nothing to do with what you've done. you're one selfish person. damn you. i dont know if God can forgive you. because now, i cant.

Desperate Housewives' Teri Hatcher SLURS Filipinos

In the Premiere of Desperate Housewives Teri Hatcher made a remark about Filipinos - doctors/nurses. She was talking to her doctor and then she said "Okay, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? 'Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines."

------

Dear Kababayan and Allies:

I heard through the grapevine about a remark made on an episode of "Desperate Housewives" last night. The scene entailed Teri Hatcher's character (Susan) at a hospital, being told by her gynecologist that she might be hitting menopause. Susan replied, "Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines." If you go to abc.com, you watch the full episode and witness the scene at about 18:50 minutes into the episode.

This type of derogatory remark is not only unnecessary and hurtful, but is also unfounded, considering the presence of Filipinos and Filipino Americans in the health care industry. Filipinos are the second largest immigrant population in the United States, with many entering the U.S. and passing their U.S. licensing boards as doctors, nurses, and medical technicians. In fact, the Philippines produces more U.S. nurses than any other country in the world. So, to belittle the education, experience, or value of Filipino Americans in health care is disrespectful and plain and simply ignorant.

As Filipino Americans, we need to band together to ensure that this type of hateful message is not allowed to continue on our television and radio airwaves. Given the recent amounts of media attention that has been given to Michael Richards (against African Americans), Isaiah Washington (against gays), and Rosie O'Donnell (against Asian/ Chinese Americans), it is ridiculous that this type of hateful speech made it through various screenwriters, the show's producers, the show's actors, and ABC itself. Yet, this isn't the first time that negative remarks have been made about the Philippines or Filipinos in the past. In recent years, we've heard one too many "dogeater" comments by "comedian" Joan Rivers on the red carpet or in her standup act, and I believe that it is about time that we stand up for ourselves, so that this type of hateful speech never happens again.

Please join me in expressing your concern, disappointment, and/or disgust to the producers of ABC.com. You can sign the petition at
http://www.petitiononline.com/FilABC/ <http://www.petitiononline.com/FilABC/> or you can reach them directly at abc7@abc.com.

And please feel free to forward this widely to other Filipinos/Filipino Americans/ Asian Americans/ and other allies.

Sincerely,

Kevin Nadal,

Hong Kong star barred from hiring Filipino maids--report

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong singer Jacky Cheung, one of Chinese pop's biggest acts, has been barred by Filipino officials from hiring any more maids from the Philippines after he fired too many them in recent years, a newspaper reported.

A Filipino activist on Wednesday questioned Cheung's employment practices and criticized the Philippine consulate, which must certify all Filipino maid contracts in Hong Kong, for not acting sooner to blacklist the singer.
The Filipino Globe newspaper -- published for Hong Kong's community of Filipino workers -- reported the unusually high maid turnover at Cheung's household in its September edition, citing local consular records.
The report said only a few of the 21 maids Cheung hired over three years completed their two-year contracts.
The newspaper said Cheung's wife, former actress May Lo, met with Consul General Alejandrino Vicente but failed to appeal the blacklisting, which prevents the Cheung household from renewing the contracts of their current four Filipino maids when their contracts expire.
Hong Kong's Apple Daily newspaper reported Wednesday that Cheung and his wife live with their two daughters in a more than 3,000-square-foot (270-square-meter) apartment.
"We told them we're sorry, but given their record, this is our policy and it's best we keep it that way," the Filipino Globe quoted Vicente as saying.
Vicente also reportedly told Lo that she threatens the livelihoods of her maids by firing them quickly.
"We also explained to her that when you terminate a contract, it's not just the person who suffers. Her family back home also suffers. She may have gone into debt just to raise the money needed to come here and she expects to earn enough money to pay it back," the official reportedly said.
Joel Blas, a duty officer at the Philippine Consulate General, declined comment on the matter and referred questions to the consulate's labor attaché, who couldn't be reached immediately.
Calls to Cheung's office went unanswered.
News of Cheung's blacklisting came after one of his former maids, Preslynsaga Catacutan, was sentenced in December to six months in jail for stealing a letter and three photos from her employer, a sentence maid organizers criticized as harsh at the time. Local media had reported that Cheung testified against the maid in that case.
Eman Villanueva, deputy secretary-general of the Filipino Migrant Workers' Union, said Wednesday Catacutan has since appealed and had her sentence halved.
Consul General Vicente was quoted as saying in the Filipino Globe that Cheung's blacklisting wasn't payback for the Catacutan case.
But Villanueva said the consulate general should have acted sooner against Cheung.
"I think it is very obvious that they are not good or ideal employers," he said.
"Why wait for an employer to replace [maids] 21 times? You can easily see the trend. In three years, if you have five, six domestic helpers not even finishing their contracts. Then there's something wrong," Villanueva said.
Tens of thousands of Filipinos work as maids in wealthy Hong Kong. Smaller numbers come from Indonesia, Thailand and Nepal.
